Week 3!

This week we have been looking at recipes and instructions! We followed recipes to make our own Gingerbread men and we wrote our own instructions! All the teachers were very impressed with our writing! We learned bossy/imperative verbs and we have started to use the conjunction ‘and’ in our sentences too!

Next week we are going on our school trip to Berkley Castle (Tuesday) and we will be writing recounts all about our trip!

In Maths we have been focusing on our Number bonds to 10 and 20! Have a go at home…add two numbers together to make 10/20!

The children had a great time in Forest Skills this week and built miniature homes for the 3 little pigs! The wind certainly tested the strength of the houses!

POLITE REMINDERS:

FOREST SKILLS

Every Friday afternoon the children take part in a Forest Skills session. As the weather is changing the children need appropriate clothing for this. Please ensure your child brings in a change of clothes, waterproof trousers and a rain jacket. WELLIES SHOULD STAY IN SCHOOL ALL WEEK.

Unfortunately if your child does not have the appropriate clothing they will not be able to take part in the session.

Reading

Please make sure your child reads 5 times a week, and that a quick note is made in their yellow reading diaries (“read with mum/dad” is fine!)

When we can see that your child has read 5 times, your child will receive a special sticker!

If you would like to change books within the week, please remind your child to place their books with the diary in the Changing Box.

We will change all books on a Thursday – provided the previous books are brought back into school; otherwise we cannot change them!

***Our trip to Berkeley Castle is on Tuesday 25th September – please make sure your consent form is in***

14.09.18

In the blink of an eye, our second week is finished and we are in full swing!

This week we have been reading the story of The Gingerbread Man, writing a recount of the story and designing our own front covers of story books. The children have been focusing on using non-negotiables (capital letters, finger spaces and full stops) independently, and some Incredible Writing has proudly made its way to our display wall! Next week, we’re going to be reading instructions on how to bake Gingerbread Men, and writing instructions using imperative verbs.

We have also been looking at number sequences, continuing number lines and finding one more and one less than a given number, in Maths. The children are recalling the skills learned in Reception really well, and next week we’ll be counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, as well as learning about number bonds.

Friday is Jeans for Genes day!
Children can wear their own clothes for a £1 donation.
We will still be doing Forest Skills on Friday afternoon so please make sure your child has appropriate, waterproof clothing in school!
Waterproof trousers, coat and wellies will be fine.

POLITE REMINDERS:

Please make sure all children have their PE kits and swimming kits in school!

If the kits are not in school, the children will not be able to take part. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child accesses the full curriculum by ensuring they have necessary clothing in school.

Reading

Please make sure your child reads 5 times a week, and that a quick note is made in their yellow reading diaries (“read with mum/dad” is fine!)

When we can see that your child has read 5 times, your child will receive a special sticker!

7.9.18 - Our First Week!

Wow – what a week we’ve all had! The children have settled into life in Year 1 really well, making lots of new friends, jumping straight into our new timetable and having lots of fun learning about our new topic; Castles and Traditional Tales. We’ve explored the stories of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel, through ‘Hot Seating’ and writing a sequence of the story. We’ve also built our own role play area of a Castle, acting out the roles of Queens and Kings, and knights in shining armour.

We’re really looking forward to our upcoming trip now to Berkeley Castle on Tuesday 25th September – a letter will be sent home soon with more details. In Maths we have been refreshing our counting, recognition and problem solving skills and we will continue to build on these next week, introducing the place value concept of ‘tens and units’.

Next week we will begin PE, Swimming and Forest Skills so please make sure your child has all the relevant clothing – with names in!!
Please see the table on our class page to confirm the days of each activity.

We will also have our first Spelling Test on Wednesday – these will be written in the back of your child’s yellow spelling book so please make sure they bring it into school, and practice them daily! Please also continue to read the two reading books every day and comment in the yellow diaries – if your child is ready to change their books they need to be placed into the ‘changing box’ so that we know. Unfortunately, we do not have time within the day to check through each child’s book bag, and we would like the children to become as independent as possible.

Polite reminder: Water bottles should only have water in them, please do not put squash in the bottles. We do provide snack for every child but if your child would prefer to bring in their own snack, please make sure it is a healthy one (we advise a piece of fruit or vegetable).

We have had a wonderful week getting to know some new faces, and catching up with familiar ones, and we’re really looking forward to all that’s coming in year one.

Enjoy a lovely weekend,

Mrs Crocker and Mrs Prideaux
