Updated 10.07.20

Congratulations Lions! You have now made it to your last week of being a part of Year 2 Lion Class 2019 - 2020. This week also marks the last week of your time in Key Stage 1, before moving on to Key Stage 2. Unfortunately, you will be the last Lion class but you have certainly been the best! I hope you have all now received your reports (via email) and that you and your families are so proud of your achievements, as you have all certainly worked so hard this year and I hope that your reports reflect and showcase this fully.

Before we all start winding down for the summer break, let me just say that it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to teach each and every one of you this year. You all have fantastic personalities - never change and always hold onto your dreams and hopes for the future. As one wise man once said, "All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them" - Walt Disney.

And finally, whether you are returning to Alligator or Crocodile class, please do still wave and say 'hi' to me as I will miss you all greatly and please know that you can always still come to me if needed, socially distanced (of course!), and the same goes for your families.

Thank you again for an amazing year.

Mr Filer J

Hello Lovely Lions, I hope you have had a great week and have been keeping active during our virtual sports week. Can you believe we only have two more weeks left in Year 2? It seems like it was just the other day that we had started the year together...doesn't time fly! Thank you for all of the fantastic letters and memories I have received. If your new teachers are Mrs Rammell/Mr Moore and Mrs Silbereis I have forwarded these onto them and hopefully they will be in touch with you soon.

I have already been in contact with some of you by phone and will continue to do so over the next two Wednesdays. My aim is to call all parents' of children who are not in a key worker group or have another member of school staff already calling them by the end of term.

Hello Lions! I hope you have had a wonderful week and have been enjoying the glorious, albeit very hot weather. I hope you have also managed to get through some of the home learning activities from last week - particularly the ones relevant to 'moving on'. If you haven't yet been able to send them through, please do so and I will pass them on to your new teachers.

Whilst in school and alongside teaching in Year 1, the other teachers and I are beginning to prepare for next year, with the sorting and organising of new equipment and books. In addition to this, we have been preparing videos and letters to welcome you all to your new classes in September. Watch out for these on the school's YouTube channel.

Hello Lions! I hope you have had a lovely week, even though there have been thunderstorms and torrential rain! Following the news of class arrangements for the next academic year, I hope that you are as pleased as I am that I will be moving up to Year 3 with you. The classes have been split, so unfortunately, I can't be with you all again but will be nearby, and for those of you joining Mrs Rammell and Mrs Silbereis in Alligator class, know that you can always come and say "hello" to me once things get back to normal - it will be lovely to see you all again!

I know transitioning to a new class can be a very exciting time for many of you but I also know it can be a bit scary and you may be feeling a little bit anxious about the changes ahead. With this in mind, Mrs HP and I have suggested some activities for you to do this week to find out a little more about your new class, and to help you to feel better about the upcoming changes. Keep an eye out on the YouTube channel and website, as there will be videos and messages coming from your new teachers!

Hello Lovely Lions! I hope that you are all well and continue to enjoy the home learning activities. I know you have been at home for a very long time now (12 weeks in total!) and I can imagine many of you are fed up with home learning but please try and stick with it the best that you can as this will only help you moving forward next year.

As the end of the school year is just around the corner, it saddens me to say that as per the government's announcement this week, Year 2 will not be returning to school this academic year. I continue to miss you all greatly and wonder what this term and last term would have been like if we were at school under normal circumstances. However, I do plan to arrange multiple TEAMs meeting for us to say 'goodbye' to one another before the end of term. I will share more information about this in the coming weeks.

Updated 24.05.20

Hello Lovely Lions! I hope that you and your families are all doing well and continue to stay safe. We are now at the start of the May half term and you only have one more term left in Year 2. I do hope that we are able to come back as Team Lion once more, however, we will have to see what the government's plan are.

In regards to next term, I would like to inform you that if schools do reopen on June 1st, I will be teaching some of the returning students in Year One, for four days a week - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This will mean that on a Wednesday I will be working from home, planning home learning activities for Year 2. I will also continue to keep in touch via telephone, but as I will working almost full time in school, I may only be able to contact you all at least once throughout term 6, until, (or if) Year 2 children return to school this academic year. I will continue to keep on top of emails and Class Dojo in terms of rewarding dojo points and replying to your messages and giving comments on the children's work. However, this may not be as often as it is now. My apologies for this in advance.

Hello Lions! I hope you are all continuing to stay safe and well. I can't believe how quickly this term is going and it will soon be the May half term. You and your parents have been absolutely amazing throughout the entire school shutdown and for that I must thank you all. Please do what is best for you and your families over the half term break. As I am sure you are all aware, Year 2 will not be returning to school after the half term break but will continue as we are currently - Mrs HP and I will ensure that there will be many more fun home learning activities next term.

It has been so lovely checking in with you all this term. If you don't hear from me this coming week, then I will be in touch again at the beginning of June.

Hello Lions! I hope you are all keeping well and continuing to stay safe. I have been overwhelmed with the amount of home learning you have all been doing this past week. It is fantastic and I am very proud of you all. Keep up the amazing work!

Communication

Once again, I have thoroughly enjoyed talking to so many of you this past week. I am a little behind with this, and if I haven't already spoken to you this term, I will be in touch early next week - mostly likely Tuesday onwards as I am in school every Monday with the key worker children.

Doodle maths and English - just to let you know that on Doodle maths and English there is a messaging service for children to communicate with one another.

As previously mentioned, I know that some children are beginning to miss their classmates. Please see the class Facebook page (that Lewis' mum kindly created: https://www.facebook.com/groups/689428171831818/?ref=share) to connect with other parents and potentially set up online calls for children to be able to connect with their peers. Alternatively, I am happy to pass on your telephone numbers (with your permission) to a child's parents/carers that your child wishes to contact - this has also been working well so far. Thank you for your continued support with this.

Updated 24.04.20

Welcome back lovely Lions. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break, and have settled back into a good home learning routine. You will have already noticed a few changes to the home learning Lion class webpage. I have put all subject specific tasks/activities, web links to online learning platforms and resources into their relevant subject folders, as well as adding a few addition folders too (see above). This will leave the main page for updates from myself. I hope that this will make it easier to navigate the webpage moving forward.

Communication

It has been so lovely speaking with so many of you already this term, by either telephone, Class Dojo or email. I have begun my fortnightly check in calls with families and am finding this such a positive experience. As previously mentioned, I know that some children are starting to really miss their friends. Please see the class Facebook page (that Lewis' mum kindly created: https://www.facebook.com/groups/689428171831818/?ref=share) to connect with other parents and potentially set up online calls for children to be able to connect with their peers. Happy Easter!

Updated 04.04.20

We have now made it to the end of term 4. What a very strange and unusual last couple of weeks it has been for us all! However, you have all been utterly amazing and have coped with the changes brilliantly. I am very proud of Team Lion.

As per Mrs Williams's video (see below), it is entirely up to you and your families how you wish to spend the Easter break. If you wish to do some learning that is fine, or if you would wish to take this time to relax with your family and have even more fun together then that is also fine. You know your family and children the best so make the most of it! You all deserve a break after getting to grips with a new way of living and working!

Phone Calls Home

It has been so lovely checking in with you all over the last two weeks. I have now spoken to each family in our class and I will pick this up again after the Easter break.

In other celebratory news, we defeated Tiger class in our Times Table Rock Stars class battle. Thank you to all of you who played TTRS over the last two weeks and helped Team Lion become victorious! Way to go Lions!!

As promised, please find a list of activities that you and your child could do over the Easter holidays:

Wishing you and your families a wonderful Easter break. If you do need me during the holidays please make contact through email or Class Dojo.

Updated 27.03.20

Happy Friday Lions!! We have made it to the end of our first week of school shutdown and what a very strange and peculiar week it has been. I hope that you have been able to spend lots of time outside this week and have enjoyed the beautiful sunshine.

Phone Calls Home

Just to let you know that if you haven't already received a phone call from me, then I will be phoning your families next week. This is just to check in with you and your families to see how you have been doing and to answer any questions that you or your parents/carers may have about home learning or anything else. This has already been such a wonderful experience and I have enjoyed hearing about all of the exciting activities and learning opportunities you have been getting up to! J

Class Dojo log in for children

Dear parents/carers,

You should have all received an invitation request, via email, to join Class Dojo yesterday morning. If not, please do check your junk box first and if it is not there please do email me (mitchell.filer1@barleyclose.org.uk) with your preferred email address so that I can invite you to join Class Dojo. From there, you can set up your account.

The next step is to invite your child to join Class Dojo also. If you are able to, please download the Class Dojo app on to a home tablet and use the barcode (in the document below) to gain access to the Class Dojo class page. Once you have logged your child on to the app, they will be able to do the following:

1. Upload their home learning activities on to their individual portfolio so both you and I can see it.

2. Use the messaging tool to contact me if they need any help or support with their home learning or if they just want to say 'hi' or tell me about their day. Apologies to those parents who I misled yesterday by saying that children could contact their classmates - this feature has not yet been developed.

3. If they would like to share something they have done, or share a piece of work that they have completed, then they can message me and I can share this on the 'class story' with the whole class.

Many thanks for your ongoing support and cooperation,

Mr Filer

Class Dojo log in for students

Hello from Mr Filer

Updated: 25.03.20

Hello Lovely Lions and welcome to our dedicated Lion class home learning page!

I hope you are all staying safe and are doing well. I am missing you all greatly; as I am sure you are all missing one another, and I hope that we can return to normality soon and continue as the amazing Team Lion once again.

Communication

During our time away from the classroom, we can still keep in touch. Here are a few ways that you and I can achieve this:

1. This web page will become one of the main ways through which I can communicate with you and also it is a way of helping you to work your way through the many different learning activities that I have and will continue to upload. However, if you have seen another learning activity that you are particularly interested in doing, then please do try it out and share it with me.

2. I will be calling each of your families every fortnight to say 'Hi' and find out what you've been up to.

3. I will be setting up the class dojo app so that you can message me on there from your homes, share work you have been doing, as well as keeping tracking all of those dojo points you have so far earned throughout the school year. You will be able to continue earning dojo points whilst at home through the completion of certain online learning activities, which I can monitor (to be explained below). Your parents/carers should receive your log in details for class dojo via email tomorrow (26.03.20).

4. Email me at: mitchell.filer1@barleyclose.org.uk

I  will aim to reply as soon as possible during school hours.

Class Dojo @ Home

Class dojo is something we have been using in Lion class for the last couple of months as an effective reward system. However, it can be used for a lot more than just that. Other ways that teachers can use class dojo is by:

  • sharing stories (like those on Facebook and Instagram) of activities the children have been doing in class.
  • being able to send and receive messages from parents and students via the messaging tool.
  • sharing the amount of dojo points your child has earned and in which areas these have been awarded in. From tomorrow (26.03.20) I will be rewarding dojo points virtually to those children who are using the Time Tables Rock Stars, doodle maths or My Maths learning platforms daily.

As mentioned above, I will be emailing those parents/carers who have provided their email address to the school previously so they can join class dojo from tomorrow (26.03.20).

Jigsaw

Our Personal, Social, Health Education programme - Jigsaw has developed some home learning resources that you can do at home along with siblings and parents. Please do check these out at: http://families.jigsawpshe.com/stuck-at-home-1/

Spellings

Instead of learning new spelling rules, Mrs HP and I decided it would be best to give you an opportunity to review all of those tricky Year 1 and Year 2 words instead - please find the documents listing these words above. Your parents/carers, siblings or friends could test you on a handful of these words next week.

Learning Activities

If you were in school last Wednesday afternoon (18.03.20) then you would have brought home a home learning pack. If not, a home learning pack would have been delivered to your home on or just after that day. In addition to these home learning packs, there are numerous learning activities that you could be doing at home - do check on the general 'Home Learning page' on the Barley Close website (click on the children's tab).  Furthermore, I will continue to update this home learning page frequently with many more home learning activities/ projects during the coming weeks.

Additionally, please do also continue to check the school Facebook, Twitter and YouTube sites to see all of the wonderful things that everyone is doing in and around our school community during this time. There are also so many fantastic learning opportunities that different teachers are sharing. Please do partake in any of these activities that interests you the most.

Finally, as previously mentioned in an earlier post, please do continue to do:

  • Times Tables Rock Stars - there is a Battle of the Bands against Tiger Class that I encourage you to take part in so that we can show those Tigers' which class has the greatest mathematicians in it! Additionally, there is also a new Top of the Rocks competition (also on TTRS) where we are competing against local schools.
  • My Maths - there are roughly 85 different lessons and homework activities to complete.
  • Doodle Maths
  • Home reading
  • Weekly spelling practise

I do hope you enjoy all of the activities listed and please do email me photos and videos of these so I can see what you're getting up to at: mitchell.filer1@barleyclose.org.uk

You will be rewarded with additional dojo points!

However, do not think that you need to be doing 6 hours of school work every day, it is important to take time out to be with your families and give yourself a break. Remember to make sure you eat healthily and drink plenty of fluids. Not forgetting how important exercise is for our health and well-being. You can make the most of the nice weather currently by playing games outside, riding your bike around the garden as well as participating in the Joe Wicks daily exercise sessions.

Finally, these are unusual times and we need to be looking after ourselves, as well as everybody else who lives at home with us - we are all finding this all a bit odd, so go and give them a hug and try your best to always be kind!

Take care and stay safe,

Mr Filer

Update: 17.03.20

Dear parents/carers,

As many children are now self-isolating, I will be updating the this webpage frequently with some home learning activities/ projects that your child can do/access from home - please see the attachment below for the first home learning project linked to our current topic.

In addition to these activities/projects, please do continue with Times Tables Rock Stars, My Maths, home reading and weekly spelling practise. If your child has left their spelling book in school then the list of weekly spellings are just below this post. Another activity your child could do with the weekly spellings is to put these words into sentences and look up their definitions using an online dictionary or paperback one.

If your child has lost any of their log in details for Times Tables Rock Stars or My Maths please do email me at: mitchell.filer1@barleyclose.org.uk and I will reply as soon as possible with your child's log in details.

The school has also been able to sign up with another online learning platform: Doodle English and Doodle Maths. I will be setting everybody up with an account this this evening (17th March). Again please do email me (using the above email address) so I can get those details to you ASAP.

Mostly importantly please do STAY SAFE!

Please take great care of yourselves and we hope to see your child back in Lion class soon - it is very quiet!!
