End of Term

Week ending 13.12.19

We have spent time this week rehearsing for our Christmas production which is on Tuesday 17th December at 2pm and 6pm. The children are doing amazingly well, singing loudly and performing their lines clearly. It is sure to be a fabulous event!

Next week will be a lovely activity-filled week as we wind down for Christmas. We will perform the show, create Christmas cards, and have a well deserved end of term party on Friday afternoon.

Celebrations:

Pupil of the Week -

Times Tables Rock Star Legend -

Have a great weekend,

Mr Filer and Mrs Selway

Week ending: 06.12.19

This week has been a busy one, continuing with our Christmas production rehearsals (the children are doing a fantastic job), baking mince pies in Topic and starting to write instruction recipes for them in English, and finding fractions of shapes and quantities in Maths. Thank you to those of you who contributed to our Elf Shelf, and if you came to the Christmas Fair on Friday evening I hope you enjoyed the festivities - and of course seeing my transformation into Buddy the Elf!

Christmas Performance

Please look in your child's book bag for a letter regarding the two performances on Tuesday 17th December (2pm and 6pm). We need to know if your child will be returning to school for the 6pm performance so please, please return the slip as soon as possible.

We thank you in advance for your support with what we hope to be a magnificent Christmas spectacular!

Spellings

We are not sending any spellings home until after the Christmas holidays as will be rehearsing our performance on Friday, and the children deserve a rest over the holidays. Please continue reading as often as you can though, and if your child is missing their spellings practice, continue with the Year 2 common exception words.

Have a wonderful weekend... only 18 sleeps until Christmas!

Mr Filer

Spellings to be tested on 06/12/19

Week ending: 22.11.19

We have had a lovely last two weeks in Lion Class (apologises for not posting last week). We have completed lots of amazing learning in all subject areas and have had lots of fun along the way! We have even started rehearsing for our Christmas performance – more information regarding this event below.

Celebrations

Congratulations to:

Pupil of the Week – Rosie (15/11/19) and Isabella (22/11/19)

Times Table Rock Star Legends – Yoana (15/11/19) and Ewan (22/11/19)

Christmas Performance

All of the children who auditioned for roles in the Christmas performance did a terrific job and Mrs H-P and I were very impressed with the talent that there was between our classes. Unfortunately, we only have 26 parts to cast and there are well over 50 children in our cohort. Therefore, not every child could have an individual part. However, everybody is a part of the performance and will have a many songs to sing.

I know that some parents have enquired about costumes. This information will be handed out on Monday.

We thank you in advance for your support with what we hope to be a magnificent Christmas spectacular.

Parents’ Evening

It was so lovely to see and meet so many of you at parents’ evening last week. I always look forward to discussing and celebrating your child’s progress and achievements with you. If you were not able to attend or make your appointment please do come and speak to me so I can arrange to meet with you.

Please find below some online versions of the handouts you should have received, as well as copies of the Teacher Assessment Framework (TAF) and past SATs papers.

Just a reminder that your child will sit the following tests in May:

•       two math papers - one in reasoning and one in arithmetic.

•       a spelling test

•       a grammar test

•       for two reading papers.

Next week’s learning

In English, we will continue our work around, ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’. We have already sequenced the recipients of the post to the items they had received and learnt about noun phrases. The children wrote some beautiful descriptions of a setting using many different noun phrases. Next week, the children will look at ‘What A Good One Look Likes’ (WAGOLL) letter and will then pick out the key vocabulary and features from the text. Then, they will plan and write their own letters to Santa. We will aim to post the letters the following week.

In maths, we are revising and assessing our learning so far this term.

In Topic, we have already covered many different family festivals from this time of year. Last week we looked at the Jewish celebration of light – Hanukkah. This week we will be learning about the American celebration of Thanksgiving. We will first learn about the history of Thanksgiving before learning how American’s celebrate Thanksgiving today. We will also think about all of the different things we are thankful for, as well as painting our own turkey masks.

As always, please do come and talk to me if you have any questions about anything listed above or if you have any concerns about your child. I am always happy to help and will support you and your child in any way possible.

Have a great weekend,

Mr Filer and Mrs Selway

Spellings to be tested on 22/11/19

Week ending: 08.11.19

What an amazing first week back! The children quickly settled back into their learning and routines, whilst having lots of fun along the way. The children produced many pieces of great work this week and I cannot wait to share this with you during our parent meetings next week.

Celebrations

Congratulations to:

Pupil of the Week – Doan

Christmas Auditions

If your child would like to have a speaking role in this year’s Christmas production, then please help them practise the lines for the part they would like to portray. The children each took home a covering letter with attached lines on Friday. Auditions will take place next Tuesday afternoon. Good luck Lions! I am sure you will all do extremely well!

Parents’ Evening

Parents’ evening will take place next Tuesday and Thursday. If you haven't already signed up, please do so asap. The sign-up sheet is on the classroom window. If these dates are not convenient for you, please do let me know so I can arrange to meet with you at an alternative time.

Next week’s learning

In English, we will continue our work around, ‘Pudsey’s Great Fundraiser’. The children will look at ‘What A Good One Look Likes’ (WAGOLL) narrative and will then pick out the key vocabulary and features from the text. Next, they will plan and then write their own narrative to retell a story.

In maths, our focus next week is subtraction. We will start the week by subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number, again, using the ‘tens and ones’ method from this week. We will build on this throughout the week by subtracting a tens numbers from a 2-digit number and finally subtract a 2-digit number from another 2-digit number.

As it is Anti-bullying week and Children in Need next week, we will be learning about these two events during our topic sessions.

Please remember that Friday is Children in Need day and the children are welcome to dress as Pudsey (spotty, yellow or brown) for a £1 donation.

We will be dancing a whole school Macarena to fundraise!

As always, please do come and talk to me if you have any questions about anything listed above or if you have any concerns about your child. I am always happy to help and will support you and your child in any way possible.

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mr Filer and Mrs Selway

Welcome back Lions! I hope you all had a lovely half term break and are looking forward to our second term together. This term is always a busy one, as there is so much going on/ to look forward to! Please keep an eye out on here (see above), the school newsletter and the Lion Class Parents’ noticeboard for dates, updates and information about all of the wonderful events taking place this term.

Forest Schools - Friday 8th November

Please can your child bring in wellies, gloves and warm waterproofs for our Forest School session this Friday. Thank you in advance J

Parents’ Evening

Parents’ evening will take place on Tuesday 12th November and Thursday 14th November. If you haven't already signed up, please do so asap. The sign-up sheets are on the classroom windows. If these dates are not convenient for you, please do let me know so I can arrange to meet with you at an alternative time.

Swimming

As previously mentioned, swimming does not take place in terms 2, 3 and 4. We will instead be practising for the Christmas production during this time. PE kit is only needed to be worn on Thursdays.

This week’s learning

In English (and in preparation for Children in Need), we will be reading, ‘Pudsey’s Great Fundraiser’.  We will begin the week by sequencing the events from the story. Then, we will focus on the suffix ending ‘-ed’ and how this suffix is added to words to turn them into the past tense. By the end of the week, the children will have written a detailed paragraph, in the past tense, about one of the events from the story.

In maths, our focus this week is addition. We will be delving deeper into the Year 2 curriculum and will begin to add the following:

  • A 2-digit number to a 1-digit number
  • A 2-digit number to a tens number
  • A 2-digit number to another 2-digit number.

We will use the ‘tens and ones’ method to solve each of the different types of addition calculations (above), which will also enable us to apply our knowledge of place value for one and two digit numbers.

Our topic for this term is ‘Family Festivals’. Over the course of the next 7 weeks, we will be learning about and celebrating different family festivals from around the world. To kick-start off our topic this week, our focus will be History and Computing. We will be learning about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot, creating our very own firework safety posters, using Microsoft Word and asking ourselves why we wear poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Day and how else can we commemorate all of those people and animals who died whilst in the line of duty.

We have so much to look forward to this term we can’t wait to get started!
