GEOGRAPHY

Barley Close Geography Curriculum Example Unit

Geography trips and mapwork at Barley Close

Intent

All children will be taught a varied curriculum based on the programmes of study from the National Curriculum. They will acquire geographical skills through field work, studying a variety of maps including atlases, Google Maps and Ordnance Survey maps and the study of places both in the UK and the wider world. They will have opportunities to learn about both Human and Physical Geography and whenever possible, relate this to their own experiences of the local area and beyond.

Implementation

In EYFS and Year 1, the children begin by studying their home, school and the local area on maps and in field work walks.  Children record their learning on their learning walls, in floor books and in their humanities books. The Barley Close Geography Curriculum has been designed with a Bristol focus and UK focus while also making sure each year group have access to learning about the wider world. Prior knowledge is built upon with links being made to countries studied in History units. This will provide children with more opportunities to make links in their learning and find out more about our world. For example, Year 3 study Ancient Greece in Term 5 History then compare Bristol to modern day Athens in Term 6 Geography. Thus building on prior knowledge and encouraging the children to compare ancient and modern day places.

In Year 1 to Year 6 Geography is taught once a week alternating a term of History then a term of Geography. At the start of each unit, a title page that lists some of the key vocabulary will be stuck at the front in each child's Humanities book. During the year, children will go on trips that deepen their understanding of geography units covered and experience practical field work to build on their prior knowledge and skills.

Impact

Through our linked curriculum approach teaching of Geography, children will develop an understanding of their local community and the wider world. Our aim is that they will develop a respect for and an enthusiasm for learning more about the diverse communities and the natural world in which we live.
