Art and Design

This is what our learners had to say when asked about their Art and Design lessons in pupil conferencing:

Art is how to express your feelings in colour! -Samiat, Year 6

Art lessons make me feel good.     -Brian, Year 1

Art lets you take your emotions out. If you’re mad, it relaxes you. As you get better, it makes you feel good. -Jude, Year 5

Art lessons make me feel calm.     - Loraya, Year 4

Art makes you feel brave to try new things.         -Sharmane, Year 4

I used to be scared whenever my teacher said we were drawing as I didn’t think I could do much. Now I do cool drawings!           -Mace, Year 4

Art is really creative and you can’t get it wrong, so it makes you feel confident.   -Siyana, Year 5

For people with needs who struggle with writing, once they do drawing, it makes their brain think “I can do this”.         -Mace, Year 4

Intent, Implementation and Impact for Art and Design at Barley Close

Intent

At Barley Close Primary School, children gain understanding and confidence in Art and Design through drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, but also to encourage mindfulness through artistic expression and creativity. At Barley Close, children experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design using a wide range of materials, tools, equipment and digital media. They also learn about famous artists and designers throughout history, using the past to inform the future. Through these activities, children also develop vital communication and teamwork skills, working together to solve problems collaboratively with their peers.

We are committed to developing a curiosity for the Art world, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the role artistic expression can play in mental health and overall wellbeing. Art and Design are inclusive at Barley Close, with every artistic creation valued as a work of Art.

Implementation

The Art and Design curriculum ensures that children learn to research, plan, create and evaluate their own work and that of others. This can be seen through activities carried out in class, or in our dedicated Art and Design room. We plan opportunities for visitors to come into school to enrich the children’s artistic experiences through real-life opportunities, further promoting a love of learning.

Lessons are planned following the Barley Close Art planning scheme, to ensure children extend their knowledge and understanding each year. Every child in Key Stage 2 has their own Sketch Book, which they use to investigate, research and respond to learning stimuli across the whole curriculum.

Impact

Their learning about Art and Design through different time periods and in different parts of the world, enables children to develop an understanding of the value and importance of self-expression and creativity, but also of the importance of making mistakes without giving up. Children at Barley Close are taught that the learning process taken to create a piece of artwork is just as valuable as the end product. They learn that making mistakes is part of a vital learning process and this impacts their resilience across the whole curriculum.

Progress in Art and Design is monitored by teachers using the Art Skills Progression document for guidance. Children’s work is displayed and celebrated throughout the school as well as in books.

Design and Technology

Intent, Implementation and Impact for Design and Technology at Barley Close

Intent

At Barley Close Primary School, children gain understanding and confidence in Design and Technology through the Research- Design- Make- Evaluate cycle. The children are encouraged to constantly evaluate their designing and making process and to make changes as needed. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, but also to encourage mindfulness through an open-ended creative process. At Barley Close, children experiment and create their own designs using a wide range of materials, tools, equipment and digital media, such as Computer-aided design. They also learn about famous designers and architects throughout history. Through these activities, children also develop vital communication and teamwork skills, working together to solve problems collaboratively with their peers. Resilience is a vital skill to develop in our young people and our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for children to experiment and learn from their mistakes.

Our Design and Technology curriculum is also inclusive, with all children supported to access and engage with each unit.

Implementation

Our Design and Technology curriculum ensures that children learn to research, design, build and evaluate their own work. We plan opportunities for visitors to come into school to enrich the children’s artistic experiences through real-life opportunities, further promoting a love of learning. We have had several workshops run at school recently by the DETI Inspire team at UWE, on topics such as building in Minecraft and sustainable travel to school.

Lessons are planned following the Barley Close DT planning scheme, to ensure children extend their knowledge and understanding each year. The children explore their design ideas by sketching diagrams in their Art Sketchbooks in Key Stage 2. These books move up Key Stage 2 with the children, so it is clear to see their progress across these vital school years.

Impact

Their learning about Design and Technology enables children to develop an understanding of the importance of pursuing a creative design idea, but also of the value of making mistakes without giving up. Children at Barley Close are taught that the explorative process taken to create a finished product is just as valuable as the end product. They learn that making mistakes is part of a vital learning process and this impacts their resilience across the whole curriculum.

Children’s work is celebrated throughout the school as well as in books and on the Class Pages of the school website.
