The National Curriculum wants schools to provide a high quality science education that allows children to understand the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science has changed our lives and all pupils should be taught the essential aspects of science.
Barley Close intent:
At Barley Close, our intent for Science is for our children:
- Have a love for learning by making lessons practical and engaging
- To use first hand experiences to develop their scientific knowledge
- To be exposed to appropriate scientific vocabulary that links to topics covered
- To be confident to be quizzical and ask questions to learn more
Barley Close Implementation:
Science is taught throughout the school in weekly lessons and is delivered by class teachers. The school follows the Endeavour hub scheme which covers units of study linked to the National Curriculum. We also offer STEM opportunities using our links at UWE, this includes having science visits and visitors. This will ensure children are given long term opportunities.
EYFS:
In Reception, children follow the Early Years Framework and children are taught how to understand the world. Children engage in scientific activities in line with the Early Years Foundation Profile.
KS1:
Children follow two learning objectives during each science lesson. One of these will always be a working scientifically skill as we want this to underpin all of our lessons.

- performing simple tests

- using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions
- gathering and recording data to help in answering questions

Barley Close impact:
All children will understand how science impacts everyday life. Children will be able to make links between their science learning and the wider environment. It will also teach the children transferable skills such as: teamwork and respect for the environment. This ensures the children develop an in depth knowledge.
