Term 3

What an amazing way to end term 3!

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of time. We looked at how to tell the time past the hour and to the hour, along with recapping o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

In english, we have finished our brilliant unit on "The Sky Garden". We have worked really hard on using noun phrases, past progressive verbs and exciting adjectives.

In science, we have been answering the question "what do plants need to grow?" We have conducted a range of experiments, including monitoring plants closely in different environments and how this can impact a plants growth.

In history, we wrapped up our unit by learning about Concorde planes! The children loved learning about them and how they were made extremely close to Bristol!

To finish off, both year 2 classes managed to achieve a class party for all of their amazing effort this term! We watched Minions, ate popcorn and even did a little bit of colouring.

A quick reminder:

Don't forget to read 5x a week please as this will support your child's fluency and word recognition which feeds into ALL areas of learning.

There's also the usual option to complete Times Table Rockstars and earn raffle tickets for this as a little added incentive.

We hope you all have a restful week off and we look forward to seeing you back with us on the 24th February.

WEEK 5 UPDATE!

Well, as always, it's been another busy week!

In English we started our new story text called "The Secret Sky Garden". It's a lovely text about a girl called Funni and the garden that she creates in the old airport car park. It is here that she meets a new friend called Zoo who clearly fills what is missing for Funni. Take a look on the reading of it on You Tube! It's a great story!

Whilst recapping noun phrases and verbs, the children are also working hard on their cursive handwriting and presentation too.

In Maths, we consolidated our understanding of using number lines for division and then moved onto our unit linked to time. We are currently recapping the 4 main times over these two weeks of o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Please highlight these times to your children as much as possible, where possible. Thank you!

Art, as you would have seen, was using pastles to recreate work in the style of Van Gogh and Cezanne. They work that they produced was fantastic and something that every child should be proud of!

In PE, we have switched to passing and dribbling skills linked to hockey. This has proved to be fun so far!

History was an interesting lesson as we found out about Amelia Earhart and why her achievements were so significant!

Science allowed us to set up our new experiment to see what temperature is best for plants to grow well. We put 4 plants in different places around school: Forest School area, class cupboard, Music Room window sill, by the front office. We are looking forward to seeing how the temperature affects the growth of plants!

We have one week left until the half term and then we're half way through the school year - crazy!!!

As always, please try to read 5x a week with your child and record this in their learning diary!

15 minutes of TTRS means 15 raffle tickets! MyMaths also means raffle tickets too!

Please also provide your child with a water bottle every day too!

We hope you are all having a fabulous weekend. Ours is chilled so far with some screen time and games/ board games to balance it out - i have 2 tired child!!

Looking forward to seeing you all next week!

Term 3 week 4 update

Another lovely week at Barley Close for Year 2. We worked on our football dribbling skills in PE. We dribbled in and out of different cones in the hall working on calm ball control.

In English, we practised using exciting adjectives like spectacular, breath-taking and enchanting to describe the bear's piano music performance from our text The Bear and the Piano. We wrote reviews of his performance using questions and exclamation sentences. Year 2 did so well to include all of this!

For Maths this week, we continued our work on fractions. Fractions can be tricky so we are super proud of all the children for not giving up!

In PSHE, Year 2 worked on a group task. We talked about how to work effectively in a group allowing everyone to play a part and being kind when sharing ideas. Next week they'll complete their collaborative lion pictures.

Have a lovely weekend, please keep supporting your child's progress by prioritising reading a little 5x a week and leaving a positive message in their yellow reading record.

Thank you!

Term 3 Week 3 Update

Another successful week in year 2!

In Maths, we have been looking at fractions. We have recapped what is a half and a quarter, we have now began to learn how to recognise thirds. Although this is a super tricky concept, we are so impressed with how resilient they have been!

In English, we worked on using interesting question marks and exclamation marks within our written work whilst also focussing on using interesting vocabulary. The children naturally use noun phrases in their speech and writing, we have been blown away with the amazing vocabulary being used throughout their writing this week. Today, we had a go at writing a persuasive text linked to the bear and the piano.

In History, we studied the Wright Brothers and how they invented the first successful aeroplane. We recapped how they loved to find out how their toys worked when they were growing up. We looked at key information to fill in fact files.

In RE, we have been learning about how Hindu's celebrate in their religion. We focused on the story of Rana and Sita. We produced freeze frames to capture key aspects of the story.

Polite reminders:

Don't forget to read 5x a week please as this will support your child's fluency and word recognition which feeds into ALL areas of learning.

There's also the usual option to complete Times Table Rockstars and earn raffle tickets for this as a little added incentive.

We hope you all have a fabulous weekend. My day has been busy prepping for my son's Mario themed birthday party - swimming and food. What could go wrong, hey?!

We look forward to welcoming you all back in Monday!

Term 3 Week 2 Update

As always, a busy week indeed with lots achieved!

In Maths, our focus was linked to counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. A lot in one week! Quick mental recall of these tables are really important and something that will come naturally to your child, in time. So feel free to practice as and when you can - on Times Table Rock Stars for example!

In English, we worked on using interesting noun phrases within our written work whilst also focussing on the features of a diary entry. The children naturally use noun phrases in their speech and writing, but our focus was to help them understand that a noun phrase is an adjective + a noun. Once we were confident with these ideas, we used them within our written diary entries whilst also including our thoughts and feelings pretending to be the Bear from our story book.

In History, we studied the Wright Brothers and how they invented the first successful aeroplane. We learned about how they loved to find out how their toys worked when they were growing up. This led them to becoming inventors. They also never gave up, even when things were difficult and failed at first.

PSHE was reflecting on our goals and how to achieve them. Thinking about why achieving a goal might be difficult but we should keep going.

In computing we went to the computer suite to use the laptops. We practised logging in and typing our names and a sentence onto a Microsoft Word document. We challenged ourselves to type with our eyes closed – this is called touch typing and it was tricky but fun.

Term 3, Week 1 learning update:

A great first week of 2025 back at Barley Close. The children have been full of smiles and so happy to see their friends.

We read a new book called The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield. It's about a bear who finds a piano in the middle of the forest and begins to play it. Over years of practice, he becomes really good at it and travels to a nearby city to play to large audiences. At the end he returns to the forest as he misses his bear friends so much. It has lovely illustrations. We practised using the conjunctions and, but, so to add more detail to our sentences.

In Maths this week we revisited place value and compared 2 digit numbers using the greater than and less than symbols. We also put amounts into ascending and descending order.

In PE we started a new unit on football and hockey skills. We worked on dribbling the ball carefully.

Our new history unit is all about the first aeroplane designed and flown by the Wright Brothers in America. We looked at the first models to try and take flight.

Reading books were changed today and new spellings were stuck into spelling books.

Have a lovely weekend.
