Week 1
It was lovely to have the children back for our last term together as Fox Class.
This week following World Dinosaur Day and the children's interest we went back far in time to learn about dinosaurs.
We looked at several non-fiction books and focused on the vocabulary herbivore, carnivore, fossil and extinct. We wrote some facts about dinosaurs in general and then chose a specific dinosaur to write about to create our own non-fiction book.
In Maths we revised addition, by putting the groups together and then by counting on.
This week we had our first swimming lesson with the PE coaches which was great fun.
Week 2
This week to celebrate World Ocean Day we went under the sea. We looked at a variety of nonfiction books about the different creatures you will find in the different oceans. We learnt about the features of a fish and labelled a diagram. We also created our own nonfiction book about our favourite under the sea creatures.
For Maths we learnt about capacity and volume. We played with water to compare the capacity of a variety of containers.
In Drawing Club we read "Barry the Fish with Fingers and the Hairy Scary Monster" by Sue Hendra. We drew the character Barry, an under the sea setting and a underwater monster, We wrote a variety of codes to allow our pictures "to come alive."
We also created our Father's Day cards.
Week 3
Following the children's interest this week we looked at Pirates. We returned to a familiar character and used the text "Billy and the Pirates" by Nadia Shareen as our inspiration. In this book Billy discovers a message in a bottle and encounters Captain Howl and his crew of pirates. We therefore drew and labelled a treasure map and wrote a message in a bottle asking for help.
In Maths we learnt about subtraction by pretending to be pirates and stealing coins from each others treasure chests.
This week was also Arts Week. We had 2 dance workshops and listened to an EarthFest concert. To link with our interest in pirates we learnt about and sang some Sea Shanties.
Week 4
This week we continued to pretend to be pirates using the text " The Night Pirates" by Peter Harris as our inspiration. We decided we would like to join the crew and so made a list of all the things we would need to become a pirate.
We used the same book for Drawing club this week and drew ourselves as pirates and designed a ship.
In Maths we looked at sharing fairly. Initially we shared just between 2 and realised it was the opposite of doubling (halving) and therefore we could only share even amounts fairly. We then tried to to share between 3 or more groups and this was a little more tricky.
In Jigsaw this week we began to think about moving to Year 1 and the things that might be different, both exciting and scary.
There was no Forest School this week as we were treated to a theatre production of "The Railway Children." This was amazing and the children thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Week 5
This week we stayed on the shore with the return of some favourite characters from the book "What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside" by Julia Donaldson. In English we wrote a list of things we would take for a day at the beach.
In Drawing club we drew the mermaid and designed ways to trap the two bad men.
In Maths we reviewed odd and even numbers and the ways we could use to determine if a number was odd or even.
In Forest School we learnt the Japanese art of Hapa Zome. We collected flowers, berries and leaves and arranged them between a folded piece of material. We then bashed them hard so that the colour was transferred, creating a picture.
