How you can help your child at home

READING

The best way you can support your child's learning at home is to read with them every day, practising their phonics skills of sounding out, blending and sight reading. This unlocks the rest of the curriculum for your child, so they can read information and questions across all subjects.

Moving into Year 2, your child should be beginning to answer questions about the text, for example:

*Why do you think they did that?

*What do you think might happen next?

*Who could help with this problem?

*What would you have done differently?

Even if your child is reluctant to independently read, please take the opportunity to read to them - listening to a story and being immersed in the language and imagination of a story is just as important as reading one independently. Play phonic and word games at home to increase their phonic knowledge, blending and segmenting skills.

We will send reading books home every week but please don't feel restricted to only reading these books. These books are great as they match your children reading level but the more books your child has exposure to, the better, especially if they are enjoying a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

WRITING

Below, are the Common Exception Words that your child should be able to read and spell by the end of Year 2. We have included the Year 1 word list as you may like to recap these before moving on. We will be practising these in school and will keep you updated on their progress.

Fish/Butterfly Practise sheets (for home): Once your child can read or spell each word in the Year 1 list, they can colour it in on the fish colouring sheet and the same for the Year 2 word list for the butterfly colouring sheet. Please feel free to ask if you would like printed copies of these to complete at home.

MATHS

The most beneficial activity your child can do for Maths is to complete their MyMaths homework activities regularly- these tasks are set to recap and practise each week's learning in class, so they are really useful for helping children to understand and embed what they have learnt. We regularly check each child's scores, so this provides us with really useful feedback if a child has struggled with an activity- then we can provide support next time this area of learning comes up in class.

Additionally, Times Tables Rock Stars is an excellent way to introduce your child to their times tables. This website will continue to be used throughout Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6), helping children build confidence, improve fluency, and develop rapid recall of multiplication facts.

In addition, there are many excellent learning websites for Maths, such as:

Topmarks: Key Stage 1 Maths - Topmarks Search

For practising the 2x table: 2 times table with games at Timestables.co.uk

BBC Bitesize: Cool online maths games for KS1, KS2, and KS3 children. - BBC Bitesize
