Week 6 Update!
Good evening! We hope you have enjoyed the first part of the weekend so far? What did you all get up to during INSET day?
The staff of Barley Close had a great day of training alongside other schools linked to belonging and neurodivergence. It was a great day for so many of us to get together and discuss and learn about these particular areas within a school setting.
So, what about your lovely children and their learning this week?
In English, we began our learning linked to persuasive leaflets - still focussing on Leon and the Place Between and began developing our understanding of homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and are spelt differently too).
In maths, we continued to consolidate our learning linked to time focussing on minutes past and to the hour. Time is a tricky one but this was a useful unit to help build our confidence! We are moving on to multiplication and division for the end of Term 1.
History saw us looking at Skara Brae in more detail and music saw us creating our own chorus with rhyming words!
PE was huge fun as we developed out skipping skills further and running skills and even incorporated a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors into it too - fab!
French, as always was huge fun as it includes, singing, practising and much more!
We were also taken around the world with a musical performance from a guitarist and a flute player. Their talent was inspiring and they definitely caught the children's attention by opening up with "We don't talk about Bruno'!
What a great week indeed!
Enjoy your Sunday and we look forward to welcoming you back on Monday.

Week 5 update
Reminder: Friday 10th October is an INSET training day for staff so school will be closed to children this day.
We've had a great week with lots of new learning. In Maths we studied time and how to tell the time on an analogue clock. We recapped o'clock and half past first then moved onto quarter past and quarter to. On Friday we learned how to tell the time in 5minute intervals past the hour like 25minutes past 4. We will continue our unit on time next week too. Any practice looking at clocks at home would help immensely and below is the link to the online teaching clock we use. Children might like to play with it.

In English this week we rewrote the story of Leon and the Place Between where Leon goes to the circus and steps into a magician's magic box. Children wrote brilliant versions of the story including the conjunctions but, so, or and adverbs for place. We're very proud of children for working so hard on their presentation and getting the shape and size of their letters correct. There is no need to join up all of their handwriting in Year 3. It's more important that letters are clear to read.
For history we continued our learning about the Stone Age and we looked at what a Stone Age home might have looked like. We discussed how in the early Stone Age, people were nomadic hunter gatherers so lived more in tents then as time went on people settled more in village type settlements so houses were more permanent. This allowed for early farming to happen.
All the children enjoyed their swimming lesson on Friday and we did our drawing like a cave painting in the afternoon.
Have a lovely weekend. Stay warm and safe in the windy weather.

Learning Update Week 4
Half way through this term and the children have had another fantastic week!
In Maths we have been looking at adding and subtracting across 10s and 100s. We have been using place value counters and place value grids to support our learning.
In Writing, we have been working towards writing our very own narratives based on the book "Leon and the Place Between". We have been learning about adverbs to express place. It is the first time the children have been introduced to this style of adverb and they have been phenominal!
In History, we documented key features about the time periods in the Stone Age.
In Science, we conducted an experiment to find out stones that were permeable and impermeable by submerging them in water and checking for bubbles.
Overall, it has been a very busy week for both Year 3 classes and they should be proud of all their amazing learning!
Have a lovely weekend, see you all on Monday :)
Learning update Week 3
First of all, we are super proud of all those children brave enough to stand up and deliver a speech in the election for Year 3 Young Leaders. There will be another chance next year in Year 4 to try again. I know some of our children were a little disappointed. Please assure them that we think they are all brilliant!
In English this week we wrote our end of unit character description of the magician Abdul Kazam from the book Leon and the Place Between. Children used fantastic adjectives like spectacular, mysterious, magical to describe him and his tricks. It was a joy to read their writing.
Maths this week was all about adding ones, tens and hundreds to 3 digit numbers. We used place value titles H for hundreds, T for tens and O for ones to work out which digit we needed to change.
In history we continued our learning about the Stone Age. We found out about the Ice Age and the types of animals that lived during that time such as the sabre tooth tiger. We labelled the features of a woolly mammoth and coloured it in. They looked great.
We also did PE, swimming and RE this week as well as PSHE and French with Ms G. Busy as always!
Reminder - please can all jumpers, bottles, lunchboxes and coats be labelled with your child's name so we can get them back to your child if they are lost. Many thanks!
Also we are noticing a few more small toys coming into school like little Stitch stuffed toy keyrings. Please can they stay safely at home as things do go missing at school.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Rammell and Miss Sheppard look forward to seeing you on Monday!
Term 1 Week 2 Update
Well, what another busy but fun week we have had!
In Maths we have continued our learning linked to place value. We first looked at understanding and recognising 100s numbers, then we represented numbers to 1000 in pictures and words and finally, we moved on to partitioning a 3 digit number into hundreds, tens and ones e.g. 573 = 500 + 70 + 3 or 573 has 5 hundreds, 7 tens and 3 ones. For our calculation lesson, we recapped our Year 2 skills and added and subtracted 2 digit numbers.
In English, we fully introduced our story for this term, Leon and the Place Between. It is a detailed picture book with excellent content and vocabulary. As a result, we recapped our understanding of noun phrases and practiced using them and then used these skills to write a detailed character description of Abdul Kazam, the magician from our story. The children worked really hard and produced lovely descriptions.
In PSHE we thought about what a nightmare school might look like, as per our Jigsaw scheme of learning. Next week, we will discuss our dream school.
In History, we looked at the Stone, Bronze and Iron age and considered the main differences as an initial introduction.
And in RE, we were looking at what might be found in a Christian home and what might be found in any home and what we could find out about a family as a result.
And finally, what better way to end a jam packed week with a trip to circus! To be honest it, child wise, it looked like Year 3 took over! It was such a fun and entertaining evening and great fun for all!
We hope you all have a fabulous weekend planned, my two are currently chilling before going to a birthday party later on!
See you all next week,
Year 3 Team
Week 1 learning update
WOW! What a fabulous first week of the year!
In Maths, we have been looking at partitioning, number lines and recapping all of our learning from last year.
In Writing, we have looked at sentence structure, ordering sentences, nouns, verbs and adjectives. They have been fabulous at recalling their writing facts.
In History, we are looking at the Stone Age! We have learned about timelines, prehistoric history and even looked at some charcoal drawings in art!
Important Information:
- PE is on a Monday and swimming is on a Friday. Please make sure they are wearing appropriate clothing and bring their swimming costumes, towel and spare underwear.
- Reading books and spellings have gone home today! Please can we push for reading 5x a week. Spelling tests will be every Friday.
- Logins for Times Table Rock Stars and My Maths have also been stuck in the front page of your reading record. We would expect 25 minutes of TTRS completed each week and complete the My Maths home learning for the week.
