Time4Reading
Like many South Gloucestershire schools our school is involved in the Time4Reading programme. This is a project that encourages children to develop their love of reading. Over the next few days your child will be bringing home a Time4Reading book mark. Please complete it for either your child or a member of your family to show which books you have read from the top 100 recommended reads. For more information please visit the Time4Reading website. Detail can be found on the bookmarks.
Thank you for your support.

After 15 Years at Barley Close and 40+ years in education Mrs Knapp is retiring and to celebrate her career and wish her well for the future, the staff at Barley Close created a little video for her!

As the end of another school year draws to a close and we get ready for our summer holiday we are preparing to say goodbye to a number of members of staff as they move on to new and exciting challenges.
Alex Capel joined BC as a fresh faced student in 2009. She has taught many children during her time here and progressed to become a valuable member of the school’s senior leadership team, these leadership qualities have been recognised within the Local Authority and she has been appointed as Assistant Headteacher at Pucklechurch.
Jaclyn Currie leaves BC after 3 years to start a new adventure in Canada. Mrs Currie started her teaching career at BC as a student where she took responsibility for a whole class, planning and delivering exciting and engaging lessons. The school was so impressed with her teaching we snapped her up as a full time teacher, where she has continued to base her teaching on excellent pupil relationships!
Steph Lee started as a new teacher at BC in 2013 and will be leaving after 2 years teaching Year 3. Miss Lee is a talented teacher who uses her imagination and passion for education to ensure the children do well; she tries new ideas and creates a jazzy classroom to inspire and motivate the children. Miss Lee has a busy year ahead of her as she moves to a new house and finalises the plans for her wedding next year.
Rachel Fortune has been a teaching assistant at BC for 11 years and has had a massive impact on many children that have progressed through the school. Mrs Fortune bounces around school ensuring the children enjoy their education and do well. She truly understands how the children ‘tick’ and her understanding of learning is excellent… Mrs Fortune moves on to a local school to continue her work as a teaching assistant. They are very lucky to have her!
Sandra Broadbent has worked at BC since 2011 as a Special Education Needs Teaching Assistant. Her dedication and caring nature has ensured that children under her care do really well, access school and enjoy their learning. During her time here, she has made a massive impact across the school, supporting children with a range of needs and being a fantastic team member. Mrs Broadbent moves onto a local school where she will continue her amazing work supporting another child.
Alan Edden-Jones only started at BC last September but the impact of his work has been excellent. His calm nature has helped support children in accessing the curriculum and engaging with their education. Mr Edden-Jones leaves BC to build on his career further and support vulnerable adults.
Last but by no means least….
We say goodbye to Hilary Knapp. Mrs Knapp has been in education for over 40 years and has worked at BC for 15 years. Mrs Knapp’s career spans a number of schools where she has taught hundreds of children as a teacher and teaching assistant, also taking on many leadership responsibilities including Acting Deputy Headteacher. Mrs Knapp is a Barley Close superstar, her dedication to education has never faltered in all her years. She continues to inspire, support and challenge children as she has always done and never allows children to do anything but their best. She has been a huge support to not only the children but the staff, parents, carers and families of Barley Close. In some cases she has taught generations of the same family!! The words I write here today could never do Mrs Knapp justice to the impact she has had on so many children over 4 decades. Mrs Knapp will be retiring next week, becoming a lady of leisure, and we wish her a restful and well deserved retirement… but don’t forget to come back and see us!
We would like to wish all staff leaving all the best in whatever the future holds for them. This week is packed full of end of year celebrations including a special staff leaving assembly (sorry parents are not able to attend this one) and a Year 6 Leavers Assembly (please see the calendar for more information).
I would also like to use this opportunity to thank all the children and families for their hard work and continued partnership with Barley Close.
If I don’t see you before the summer holidays, have a well-deserved, fun and sunny (hopefully!) six weeks holiday!
Kind Regards,
Mr Beament
Acting Headteacher
